Osteoporosis Nutrition Consults

I’ve been asked to explain how an Osteoporosis Nutrition consult works. So, here is how I generally work with my clients. I start by asking you to give me something informal outlining how you like to eat. What you eat for breakfast, lunch, supper and snacks. What foods you avoid. Also, I request photos or a list of all your supplements. Then together, we review your eating habits and supplements and identify areas of concern or where you can improve your diet to make it more bone healthy. We look at all the nutrients that are essential to strong bones and make sure you are getting them in your diet. This goes way beyond the typical calcium and vitamin D, but of course, includes them as well.

Our goal is a flexible eating plan designed specifically for you and how you like to eat, that meets all the bone healthy diet requirements. We also figure out what, if any, supplements you need to take and make sure you are not over-supplementing, which is not unusual. There is so much confusing information out there that some find themselves overwhelmed and confused about what they can eat. Some of my clients learn they are giving up foods they enjoy unnecessarily. I follow up our time together with a worksheet and checklist to help you stay on track and remember everything we talked about. While optional, it is usually helpful to schedule a follow-up appointment several weeks later so we can tweak the plan and answer any questions that have come up.

If you would like help with your diet, I’d be happy to work with you. Just contact me at nancy@food4osteoporosis.com to schedule a time and date that works best. Meeting other women, and men, who are fighting this condition and helping them be sure they are doing everything they can nutritionally to build strong bones is my favorite part of being an Osteoporosis Nutrition Dietitian.
